History of Asbestos
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is fibrous, which provides good thermal insulation, fire retardance, and acoustic insulation. For these reasons, it was very common to use in construction materials.
In construction it was common until the late 1970s to use asbestos containing materials in roofing shingles, exterior wallboard, acoustic spray (popcorn ceilings), insulation, flues, duct tapes, and more. Here are some examples found by Tanque Verde Home Inspections:
Health concerns due to cancer risks, caused Asbestos to be banned from residential home construction in 1978. However, existing stockpiles were allowed to be used, so it is conceivable such materials were still used into the early 1980’s.
Should I Be Concerned?
People typically panic when they hear their home may contain asbestos containing materials. However, generally, there is no need to panic. If undisturbed, is not generally considered harmful. Only when it becomes airborne can it be harmful to the lungs.
While your home may contain asbestos containing materials, it is not a reason to panic. If you wish to have it removed, have it tested by a professional. If it tests positive, then you should have it removed by a professional.
