Double Tapping
Double Tapping is when multiple wires are connected to a single breaker. There are some breakers that can safely accommodate multiple wires, but most breakers are not rated for this. For example, Square D breakers commonly have two slots that enable one wire to fit into each slot, safely accommodating two wires. However, most breakers don’t have these slots and instead use the lug to secure one wire. If two wires are installed under a single lug, it is possible that one or both wires could become loose thus creating an arcing hazard.
How to Fix a Double Tapped Breaker?
There are several options to fix a double tapped breaker. If there are extra breaker slots in the panel, another breaker can be added to move the extra wire to the new breaker. If no extra slots are available, then it might be possible to add a tandem breaker. A tandem breaker is two breakers in one. This way the breaker can safely accommodate both wires. Consult with a licensed electrical contractor to evaluate the best option and to safely have the work done.
